Release Date: 1 September 1997
Wintertree Software announces the release of the Sentry Spelling-Checker Engine software development kit for Java, a royalty-free Java class library developers can use to add professional-quality spelling checker capabilities to their Java applications.
A key advantage of Java technology is platform independence. The Sentry Java SDK is written entirely in the Java language and contains to native code. This means Sentry can be used in applications developed and deployed on any Java-compatible computer platform, including Microsoft Windows, Sun Solaris, and Apple Macintosh. The Sentry Java SDK conforms to the 100% Pure Java guidelines.
Java technology is relatively new and is evolving rapidly. To meet the needs of a wide range of software developers, the Sentry Java SDK includes class libraries for versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the Java Development Kit (JDK).
Software developers can use the Sentry Java SDK to check the spelling of individual words, text strings, and Java AWT TextArea components. Sentry's object-oriented application-program interface has been designed to capitalize on the extensible nature of Java's classes and interfaces, allowing developers to customize the API to suit application-specific needs.
The Sentry SDK includes classes which implement common dialogs, including a dialog which the application's users interact with to check and correct spelling, a user-dictionary editing dialog, and an option setting dialog. Developers can also bypass the included dialog classes and call the spelling-checker engine directly.
American and UK English dictionaries, each containing 100,000 words, are included with the Sentry Java SDK. Dictionaries for Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish, as well as medical terms, are available from Wintertree Software. All dictionaries use characters from the Unicode character set.
The Sentry SDK supports user dictionaries to which users can add personal words. Multiple user dictionaries can be open at once, allowing users to organize their dictionaries to suit individual spell-checking sessions. Words can be added to user dictionaries for automatic or conditional correction, so the Sentry engine can automatically correct common misspellings or even expand abbreviations. A user dictionary which corrects hundreds of common English misspellings is included.
Developers with their own large word lists can take advantage of Wintertree Software's dictionary compression technology, which is accessible through the Sentry API or through an included utility program written in Java. Developers can use this facility to create their own compressed dictionaries for use with the Sentry engine.
The Sentry Spelling-Checker Engine Java SDK is available for [see catalog]. The Java source code for the engine and related software is available for [see catalog]. The Sentry software and dictionaries can be distributed with applications royalty free.
